Scientific Poster Essentials
What you'll learn
This course provides a comprehensive, practical guide to creating effective scientific posters that communicate research clearly and professionally. You'll learn how to transform complex data into a compelling visual story by mastering content structure, design principles, and presentation techniques.
The course covers the essential components of a scientific poster—title, abstract, introduction, methods, results, and conclusions—using frameworks like IMRaD and case-based layouts. You’ll discover how to write concise, impactful text that complements visuals rather than competes with them. Emphasis is placed on visual storytelling: selecting the right charts and images, ensuring high resolution, and using data to support a focused narrative.
You’ll also explore key design elements such as layout, color theory, typography, and spacing, guided by cognitive principles like dual coding and cognitive load theory. Learn to balance text, visuals, and white space (20/40/40 rule), choose accessible fonts and color contrasts, and avoid common design pitfalls.
Finally, the course prepares you to confidently present your poster with a clear, engaging pitch—delivering your key message in under five minutes. Whether you're a student, researcher, or clinician, this course equips you with practical skills to stand out at conferences and share your work with impact.

Course objectives
By the end of this course, learners will be able to:
• Explain the purpose of a scientific poster and distinguish effective posters from common ineffective formats.
• Organise poster content using a clear structure (e.g., IMRaD or case-based) aligned with the research message.
• Write concise poster text (title, aims, methods, results, conclusions) that supports fast scanning and comprehension.
• Select and format appropriate visuals (figures, tables, graphs) to communicate data accurately and clearly.
• Apply core design principles (layout, visual hierarchy, typography, colour, spacing) to produce a readable, professional poster and prepare a short poster pitch (≤5 minutes) summarising the key message.
