Self-assessment
For researchers
Before starting a course, take a moment to reflect on your current competences. The ResearchComp framework helps you actively assess your strengths and spot areas where you can grow at any stage of your research career.
What is ResearchComp?
ResearchComp is the European Competence Framework for Researchers. It defines what researchers need to thrive, from PhD students to experienced group leaders. It includes seven competence areas:
- Cognitive Abilities
- Doing Research
- Managing Research
- Managing Research Tools
- Making an Impact
- Working with Others
- Self-Management
Each competence is broken into specific skills and described across four levels: Foundational, Intermediate, Advanced, and Expert.
How to use it
Until our self-assessment tool is ready, you can use the ResearchComp framework for guided reflection:
- Browse the seven areas and read through the examples at each level.
- Think about your day-to-day work. Which descriptions feel familiar? Which challenge you?
- Use this to navigate the course catalogue. Courses are organised by competence area and level, so you can find what fits your current needs.
We truly recommend taking this moment to reflect. It’s your first step toward purposeful growth, using a framework that helps you understand and develop key competences recognised across the European research environment.
